Dr Goh Keng Swee's Perseverance

15 May 2010, In a tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim hoped the young would pick up this wonderful value of perseverance from Dr Goh:

“One thing young people should learn from him is to never give up. Persevere. That’s the most important thing. If not, we wouldn’t be here today. His legacy will be very, very long – from national service to education to finance. He was an amazing man.”

What has this to do with learning, you may ask. Lots of it! If a student faces a difficult math problem in school or a tough challenge in life, which will serve him better? Give up or persevere? Obviously, it is better to persevere. But, which is the easier way out? Some students take the easier way out because they do not have the confidence or the proper values called determination and diligence.

When boiling water, you do not turn off the gas before it reaches 100 degree, right? In learning, one should not quit before all effort has been put in responsibly. REMEMBER: Winners never quit, and quitters never win!
